FDA Approval: January 2006
Indication: Chronic idiopathic constipation in adults
Pharmacology: Chloride channel C1C-2 activator
Usual Dose: 24 mcg orally twice a day with food
Contraindications: History of mechanical GI obstruction
Hypersensitivity to ingredients
Warnings: Evaluate patients with signs of GI obstruction before starting drug

Pregnancy must be excluded before starting drug and women must use effective contraception during treatment

Should not be taken by patients with severe diarrhea

May take with food to reduce nausea

No data exist for use in pediatric patients or patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency

Nursing mothers should either discontinue breastfeeding or discontinue the drug

Pregnancy Category: C
Side Effects: Nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, vomiting, abdominal pain & distension

Headache, dizziness, hypoesthesia

Edema, fatigue, chest discomfort, infections

Arthralgia, back & extremity pain

Dyspnea, cough, pharyngolaryngeal pain

Depression, anxiety, insomnia
