Rasagiline tablets

FDA Approval: 16 May 2006
Indication: Parkinson's disease
Pharmacology: MAO-B inhibitor
Usual Dose: Monotherapy:  1 mg orally once a day

Adjunct to levodopa: 0.5 mg orally once a day

Contraindications: Concomitant meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene, dextromethorphan, St John's wort, mirtazapine, cyclobenzaprine, sympathomimetics, MAO inhibitors

Discontinue at least 14 days before elective surgery with general anesthesia

Pheochromocytoma

Warnings: Tyramine-rich foods, SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs should be avoided

Monitor for symptoms of blood pressure increase and hypertensive crisis

Reduce dose to 0.5 mg/day in patients with mild liver insufficiency

Avoid in patients with moderate or severe liver insufficiency

Monitor patients for melanoma

May potentiate levodopa-associated dyskinesia

Postural hypotension has occurred, most often during the first 2 months

Advise patients that hallucinations may occur

Caution is recommended during lactation; may inhibit milk secretion

Safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients

Pregnancy Category: C
Side Effects: Monotherapy, most common:  headache, arthralgia, dyspepsia, depression, fall, flu syndrome

Adjunct therapy, most common:  dyskinesia, accidental injury, weight loss, postural hypotension, vomiting, anorexia, arthralgia, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, dry mouth, rash, ecchymosis, somnolence, paresthesia
